The Blue Moon Art Project contest calls on artists to depict “artfully crafted” beer.
Themes of the Mississippi Gulf Coast are throughout the art that captured first place for the 2014 Blue Moon Art Project contest.
Suzan Templin of Biloxi created a piece that features blue crabs embracing Blue Moon beer as they rest on a magnolia scented beach surrounded by pelicans flying over the Biloxi Lighthouse and a Biloxi schooner sailing free in the Gulf.
“I even added the orange because the beer is so pretty served with a wedge of orange. Blue Moon is my favorite beer,” she said.
The Minnesota native worked as an artist at Keesler Air Force Base for 20 years before venturing out to do freelance work.
“I’m a full time artist. I’ve been successful with my nautical and coastal work. When I made my Blue Moon piece, I was trying to put something in for everyone,” Templin said.
She received a $2,000 cash prize.
Posters of her winning watercolor will be on display throughout the festival this year.
The first place entry is selected by Blue Moon officials prior to the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival, and it is not revealed until the awards ceremony Sunday afternoon. The other top entries are displayed during the festival with an
invitation for people to vote on their favorite one for the People’s Choice award.
Elizabeth Huffmaster of Saucier won the Blue Moon Art Project in 2012 with a painting of pelicans. She then turned around and won the People’s Choice awards in 2013 with an alligator, and 2014 with a blue heron and frogs. She received a cash prize of $500.
“I have been humbled by this, especially when
I found out how many people enter each year. It’s quite an honor to get these awards,” she said. “I’m a little apprehensive now because I’ve been so lucky.”
Huffmaster has been so inspired that she had three ideas of what to paint. She then narrowed them down to one before entering the 2015 Blue Moon Art Project. Templin, on the other hand, said her 2015 entry was created after she sat at her drawing table and cleared her mind.
The Blue Moon Art Project contest was started six years ago when the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce-Main Street-Tourism Bureau partnered with Blue Moon through F.E.B. Distributing Co. Artists over the age of 21 throughout Mississippi are invited to enter the contest to depict the “Artfully Crafted” beer.
