THE FACES OF LUCKIES FURNITURE WAREHOUSE
Three generations strong, Luckies Furniture is celebrating it’s 70th anniversary this year. Since 1954, Luckies has been serving the Mississippi Gulf Coast residents, businesses, and community, all while maintaining a family bond that has always been the heart and strength of their business.
Alfred and Helen Elmore started the family business in 1954. Alfred, originally from Texas, joined the Air Force and was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, where he worked as an electronics instructor. Both Alfred and Helen loved the culture, people, and overall way of life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, so much so that they decided to put down roots and start a family and a business.
Alfred had a passion for electronics and real estate. He originally opened an electronics and appliance store in Biloxi and began investing in real estate all over the Gulf Coast. It was Helen that decided to open a furniture store. Now, 70 years and three generations of Elmores later, the family business is still going strong with plans on being around for another three generations.
Today, Alfred and Helen’s children and grandchildren own and operate the family business. Steven Elmore is president, Susan Elmore Shireman is vice president, Vicki Elmore is operations manager, and Amber Elmore Guess is sales and marketing manager.
While family is important to the success of Luckies, they could not do it without their employees. They have a great team, promote a family atmosphere, and some of their employees have been with them for over 30 years.
“Our family bond is a powerful thing,” Guess says. There is complete trust with everyone, we understand that we are in this together and are working toward common goals. This isn’t just a job for us, it’s a legacy, a passion, something that we love doing – something we hope our kids will be a part of one day.”
Guess grew up in the business and has many great childhood memories of coming to work with her parents, playing with her siblings and cousins in the warehouse, and seeing her grandparents and other family members everyday.
“Our customers are the heart of our business,” she says. “We have customers that have trusted Luckies with their furniture needs for three generations. We understand that people have a choice of where to buy furniture, and we must provide the best service, the best prices, and the best experience to earn their business. People invite us into their homes, trust us to help them make their house a home, and we take that very seriously.”
