Doctor? Who wants to go to
the doctor? For many men, being
pushed by mothers, spouses, and
friends is the one and only way to
get them to a doctor’s office. It’s
often the case that men will wait to
go to the doctor until it’s too late or they’re in dire need.
As you age, the necessity to schedule an appointment increases. The Mayo Clinic, a leading voice in the healthcare industry, recommends that men in good health under 50 years of age should go in for a check up every three to five years. However, for men over 50, they should make an appointment at least once a year to consult with their doctor and make sure they’re health is on track.
Dr. Jason Payne, a South Mississippi surgeon in partnership with Singing River Health System with a focus on bariatric and minimall- invasive surgery, gives us some great insight on what men need to look for in a doctor. He says, “When looking for a primary care provider or specialist, some qualities to look for are availability, friendliness, confidence,
knowledge, and skill.” Anytime you are looking for outstanding care, these traits will not only create a better experience, but make you want to come back to see someone you know cares about you.
On the topic of regular checkups, Dr. Payne weighs in saying, “As men age it’s important to continue to eat
a heart healthy diet and get regular exercise, along with your yearly checkup. It’s also important to have a Prostate-Specific Antigen test regularly, in addition to a screening colonoscopy beginning at age 50 or younger. This is especially important if there is a family history of colon or rectal cancer.” Many experts like Payne say that after age 50, it’s extremely important to get regular checkups and see specialists for areas that you and your primary physician deem necessary.
The truth is that when we age, our bodies need more care and attention than when we were younger. Although it’s important to see your doctor at all ages, for men over 50, it’s an absolute must to get regular checkups and find a doctor that truly cares about your health.
