Is It Time to Downsize?

In the blink of an eye, the kids are going to college and moving on to the next chapter of their adult lives. This leaves the empty nester with decisions to make about their future housing needs. Should we downsize the house? Should we move to another location?
Downsizing can be very attractive to those who are no longer in need of the large family home and yard with upkeep. It might be the perfect time to find a smaller home in that neighborhood with a zero lot line, or giving the town home/condo world a chance.
There are many benefits into making these real estate moves. Buying a smaller home saves money on taxes and insurance. It also gives you more freedom to travel and more time to enjoy your hobbies. For others, this might be time to move to a more desirable beach community and enjoy retirement. Speaking with clients, I think one common desire is to be able to have less to maintain and more time to do the things they have always wanted to do.
Downsizing can be an adjustment. You might choose to buy a smaller property and use the money you have freed up to buy the vacation home you have always wanted. There are many benefits to being in a condominium and town home community. Most complexes have beautiful outdoor common areas to offer, such as pools, outdoor kitchens, and pavilion areas. It makes it so nice to be able to utilize these amenities without the worry
of maintaining them. Having the freedom to pick up and travel and not having to worry about maintaining a large property also gives many peace of mind.
