Some of the best chefs are born simply from an inherent and innate desire to cook good food. Something about it just comes natural to them, as if it’s exactly what they were designed to do. If you ever meet Yul Grace, owner of Yul’s Place, Biloxi, you will quickly learn that he is one of these special people. From his boiled crawfish
to his pulled pork to his signature smoked burger, Yul’s food is like no other.
Yul’s Place opened in 2020 and Grace, was determined for this restaurant to be his namesake. His philosophy is that if you put your own name on something, you’ll put
in more effort and you’ll work harder to ensure its success. He was definitely on the right track.
Yul’s menu is home to feelgood options that will warm your palate and your soul. Freshly smoked meats, delicately steamed seafood, and a great selection of your fried favorites are there for your choosing. Out of the gate, the chicken wings were my favorite – drumsticks and flats marinate
overnight in house spices, and are then slow smoked in Yul’s signature smoke pit. Directly before serving, they’re flash-fried and seasoned with a hot honey sauce or, my preference, a spicy lemon pepper. They’re positively amazing.
Two more amazing items are Grace’s signature pulled pork and ribs, which both showcase his talent for all things smoked. Using a secret ingredient house rub, tender pork shoulder is slow smoked for around 13 hours then pulled to meaty perfection. The pulled pork sandwich is a house favorite and is served best with a side of slaw
and creamy potato salad. If you’ve come hungry, the ribs are the dish for you. Any true rib connoisseur will tell you the mark of a good plate of ribs is how easily they fall off the bone and Yul’s ribs are fall-off- the-bone delicious. Grace prefers the St. Louis style to regular baby back ribs as the higher fat content brings out an additional depth of flavor. Look for his signature smoke ring – a surefire sign that his ribs
