On September 16, 1923, St. Augustine Seminary in Bay St. Louis opened. Its opening is considered to be one of the most important events for Black Catholics in the United States, because it signaled a new beginning: St. Augustine Seminary was the first seminary meant to train Black priests in the United States. At a time when most Catholic colleges and seminaries did not admit Black students, and those seeking
to go into priesthood had to train abroad, this changed the landscape of the Catholic church in the 20th century.
St. Augustine Seminary was established by the Society of
the Divine Word, who had been working tirelessly to educate Black children and convert Black people to Catholicism in the United States.
To celebrate this centennial anniversary, St. Augustine Seminary will be hosting a gospel and jazz concert celebration on October 28-29. There will be historical displays, tours of the Seminary, entertainment, a procession from St. Rose de Lima Church to St. Augustine Seminary, and more.
