“Certainly the start of the pandemic was an odd time to consider opening a business. Restaurants in particular were shut down, but I saw that as an opportunity to go a different route. My wife and I started our curbside Daddy’s BBQ Pop Up at the Bayou View Quick Stop in March of 2020 just with word of mouth, and had cars lined around the block from the very first night!”
The pop up food concept is akin to a restaurant without walls. For Daddy’s BBQ, that means preparing and smoking at a commercial kitchen, then bringing pre-ordered items to a location for curbside distribution. The flexibility of a pop up suits Bates, who stays extremely busy as a photographer, is Chair of Gulf Coast Community Ministries, and does barbecue fundraising for organizations in multiple states. He also still finds time to travel to barbecue competitions, including the most recent “world championship” Memphis in May event, where he entered his own barbecue sauce as part of the Hog Addiction team, placing 7th out of a field of 76 sauce entries and beating out a long list of well-known competitors.
Daddy’s BBQ Pop Up events feature whole smoked meats including briskets, hams, turkeys, pork butts, ribs, loins & sausage, chicken, smoked pork and beans, potato salad, slaw and more are ordered online at www.daddysbbq.com. On the site, customers can also sign up to receive notice of events. Pre-order/pre-pay is required and it is recommended that orders be placed a few days to a week ahead of each event

“Barbecue has been a true blessing in my life. I’ve been able to help others in their time of need, to grow my father’s love into an enjoyable business, and I am loving being able to bring Daddy’s BBQ to our community,” Bates says. “It’s a very delicious dream come true.”
