Making a Statement
story by Barbara Travis
We all know that stunning accessories have the power to transform any outfit into a stylish magnet. It’s all about the selection and the presentation. There’s much discussion about the fashion impact of statement pieces
but little instruction about what they are, how to choose them, or how to properly wear them. Let’s fix that.
Simply put, statement pieces are single items of clothing or accessories that draw attention. Whether it be a chunky necklace, a colorful pair of shoes or handbag, a snazzy jacket, or a stack
of bangle bracelets, they stand out.
They speak. Their purpose is to add something special to an outfit and express individuality and personality. Most often, these strong statements are made with jewelry because jewelry can quickly communicate personality and creativity.
Whether it be a unique necklace, pair of earrings, or finger ring, wear it right and wear it well. Pair your statement necklace with the right neckline. Strapless, off-shoulder, scoop, or v-neck designs work best because each offers an open space for showcasing a special piece.
Statement earrings are popular because they’re fashionable and instantly eye-catching. They’re large and in charge; they stand up and stand out. They turn heads from every direction.
Statement rings are bold in design and traditionally worn on the right hand on the middle or ring finger to not distract from a wedding or engagement ring. They are a fun way to flash a little self-imposed sassy style.
The same goes for statement bracelets. These can be a wide metallic or adorned cuff or a stack of smaller bangle bracelets. Both choices attract attention. Hint: Be sure your stack doesn’t jingle. That’s never a good thing; in fact, it’s darn right distracting.
Statement pieces should be interesting or unique enough to make people take a second look, but not too loud or outlandish. Adding a pop of color or a standout feature is an easy way to dress up or perk up a simple outfit, but a few rules apply. Let the statement piece be the main attraction. The rest of the outfit should play a stage-setting backup role.
Don’t let colors and patterns fight each other for attention. In general, neutral
and solid colors offer the best background for extravagant or flashy accessories. Any additional accessories worn along the statement piece should be kept minimal and simple. Artistic harmony is the goal.
Fashion rules are one thing; creativity is another. The most important thing is to wear your big, bold items according to your personal style and in a way that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
