  HEALTHY LIVING
story by Luke Height WOMEN'S NUTRITION
This month, as we celebrate the wonderful women of our coast, it’s
vital to learn how to take care of our bodies and understand women’s nutrition. Christy Radich, owner of Crooked Letter Crossfit in D’Iberville, entrepreneur, and athlete, offers some outstanding insights on the difference between men and women’s nutrition and ways ladies can optimize their health.
Radich says, “Biologically speaking, men and women’s basic needs are quite similar. One of the first and most basic steps should be to eat balanced macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) in the form of whole foods. Drink plenty of water, get seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Train smart with an emphasis on technique, consistency, and then intensity. Stretch out and mobilize. Get outdoors, play with your kids, connect with nature, and absorb natural sunlight.”
These are the main components that she considers to be vital to women's nutrition. Her philosophy combines food, exercise, sleep, human interaction and getting some high quality Vitamin D from the sun.
Beyond the similarities, she mentions one area where things aren’t the same. She says, “One of the biggest differences in men and women's nutrition is hormone regulation. Women should make a conscious effort to incorporate more healthy fats into their diet to ensure proper hormone development, regulation and use by the body.” Some healthy fats that women can bring into their daily diet are: MCT oil, avocados, almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, fatty fish, olive, and coconut oils.
On top of making sure to take care of the body holistically with nutrition, exercise. and all the other great tips Radich mentions, there’s another important part to women’s nutrition. She says, “I recommend a good multivitamin for women to help fill the gaps not being met by their diet.”
