a choice of steamed seafood item. Redfish and salmon are also served, along with hand- breaded favorites, such as the traditional seafood platter with shrimp, oysters, soft shell crab and catfish all lightly dusted and fried; the po-boy on a Big Easy-type bun; and the Pontchartrain, a crispy soft-shell crab nested over a piece of fried redfish topped with a creamy crawfish sauce.
It is always good to have options, and The Steamer has plenty. There is also the Cajun seafood Alfredo, blackened chicken Alfredo, stuffed
shrimp and the “best
of three worlds”
shrimp platter.
We indulged on
this aptly named
shrimp platter that
comes with steamed
royal reds, fried Gulf
shrimp and crab meat-
stuffed shrimp. The crab meat stuffing was something we noticed from the beginning, as it is the same stuffing that is used for the award-winning crab cakes appetizer that comes from award-winning Island View Chef Jackie Seavey. Each type of shrimp was perfectly prepared. The steamed shrimp were delicious, the fried shrimp were in a light, crispy batter that wasn’t overwhelming, and we loved the broiled shrimp, in part, because of the delicious crab meat stuffing. This dish really was the best of three worlds.

and we eagerly
selected fried okra
and candied sweet
potatoes, along with
turnip greens with
ham hock and green
beans with bacon. Additional sides include new redskin potatoes, corn on the cob, au gratin potatoes, and mac and cheese.
 Southern Bites
Take a break from the action on the casino floor at Bally’s Vicksburg and enjoy some down-home favorites at Southern Bites. Daily Blue Plate
specials include fried chicken (top), fried catfish (right), country fried
steak (below) and beef tips. Each meal comes with two sides. Southern Bites also offers sandwiches, burgers and salads. Breakfast is available Saturdays and Sundays from 8 to 11 a.m. Southern Bites opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. on weekends.
        Strawberry tall cake
It was a wonderful meal at the Steamer, but we weren’t quite finished yet. The dessert choices called to us, and Chef Vasquez was quick to bring us a piece of the strawberry tall cake — it’s shortcake all
grown up. This white cake with strawberry- white chocolate mousse and whipped cream frosting comes served on its side because serving it upright offers a chance this very tall cake will tip over. It’s a berry good way to end the meal.
Beach Blvd. Steamer is located across the street from Island View Casino and adjacent to Coast Candymakers. It is open for dinner Thursday through Sunday, 5 to 10 p.m. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling (228) 314-1515.
