STAY CONNECTED
Brave Educators
This edition of Alcorn pays tribute to the many Brave educators who dedicate their lives to ensure that every child receives a quality and meaningful education. We recognize that there are many great teachers in Alcorn’s history who have given of their time, hearts, souls and funds to nurture and build in us that specialness that they knew was essential to our education, key to our success and vital to help us change our future.
I was fortunate enough to be taught by many Brave educa- tors. My first-grade teacher, Mrs. Orelia P. Crump ’52, is an Alcornite. She was patient and kind and the first person to tell me that I was smart and capable. Mrs. Crump did not punish me or kick me out of her class for my inability to keep quiet. Instead, she did something most would consider unusual — she gave me a stage. That stage built my confidence and love of storytelling. Mrs. Crump allowed me to stand before the class at the end of the day and share stories.
Encouraging a child — in the smallest or biggest way — can teach disci-
pline, demonstrate kindness and instill in them the will to never give up. Mrs. Crump, along with my family, community and a host of great teachers, shaped me into the person I am today.
Great teachers inspire change and change lives.
