through First and Second Year Experience
The First and Second Year Experience (FYE) program at Alcorn is designed with new students in mind and carries the experience of orientation throughout the year. Programs begin in the summer and continue throughout the academic year. “FYE helps students to quickly learn the ins and outs of academic and social life so that they can get the most out of their first two years at the university,” says program director, Dr. Patricia White.
Programs are tailored to the needs of the students and help them effectively bridge the gap from high school to college and on to their sophomore year. The goals are to provide tools, tips and strategies that will help students with their transition, prepare them for the academic rigor of college and assist with the development of leadership, character and responsibilities, all to foster meaningful relationships with faculty and staff.
“FYE connected me with faculty and staff and other first-year students early on,” shares Gulfport, Mississippi, native and pre-nurs- ing major Makaila Boddy. “The experience made the transition from high school to col- lege so much easier. I was able to speak di- rectly with the right people to complete the registration process and learn more about the academic side of things.”
As a component of the First and Second Year Experience program, two one-day summer
orientation programs, referred to as Sum- mer Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR), complement each Fall Orientation. Students come to campus for an in-person orientation during the summer. In the infor- mation sessions, various university represen- tatives provide students and parents with helpful tips regarding services and resources offered. Professional academic advisors as- sist new students with developing an educa- tional plan by selecting a major and classes for the fall semester. Student leaders assist new students in whatever areas needed to make the process less stressful.
Computer science major Maliek Daniels from Bassfield, Mississippi, didn’t know what to expect in college, but was thrilled to find a supportive academic environment at Alcorn. “My first year at Alcorn has been an exciting experience. I really felt like the attention was on me and making sure that I had what I needed to be successful as an individual.”
To create a smooth transition to Alcorn, new students are required to attend Fall or Spring New Student Orientation. The three- day orientation process is quite interactive. It is a way for new students to mingle and con- nect with the Alcorn campus and communi- ty. Students participate in workshops, panel discussions, a picnic, bonding brunches with faculty, staff and student leaders, and a plethora of other fun, engaging activities.
