STAY CONNECTED
is on the RISE
This is my first publication as editor of Alcorn, The University Magazine. I am honored and grateful to be entrusted with telling the Alcorn story. I look forward to continuing the great work of sharing the news, experiences and successes of the Alcorn family.
At Alcorn, we are on the rise and in the midst of extraordinary progress and development. From noteworthy climbs in higher education rankings to new academic programs and facilities to continuing athletics successes, the home of the Braves is seeing unprecedented momentum and advancement.
In this issue, we reflect on a Brave rising and the accomplishments of our president and Alcornite, Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. (’93) who was appointed the 7th Commissioner of Higher Education of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL). We pay tribute to him by featuring a few of the many successes witnessed during his tenure as president from 2014 to 2018. We are grateful to President Rankins for his service and successful leadership of our dear Alcorn. We wish him well in his new role.
This magazine also highlights the rise of many of you – our fellow alumni, faculty, staff and students. We celebrate your uplift and achievements.
Did you know that with Dr. Rankins promotion to Commissioner of IHL, Alcornites lead three significant departments in Mississippi’s government?
The appointments of Rankins, Pelicia Hall (’97) as Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections and Chris Gillard (’93) as Assistant Commissioner of Public Safety and Director of the Mississippi Highway Patrol represents the greatness of Alcorn knowledge and character. The historic rise of these three Braves to the pinnacles of public service in state government personifies the university’s credo “Service. Scholarship. Dignity.”
