“We had a strong desire to find a balance between our passion for food and hospitality and our love for our family,” Rachel says . “Very quickly an idea began to grow in our heads and hearts for a café and coffee shop where we could create the food and environment we love while still honoring our core values as a family.”
They had a vision of what they wanted to do but didn’t know how to make it happen or what to name
it. The concept for The BrewPaddle Café first came about in 2017 while Scott was working at a French brasserie in Nashville. “He loved the environment and the food he was able to create there, but the hours were tough on our young family,” Rachel said.
While the name of their business may seem strange, there is a reason for it. Before his sudden passing in January 2021, Rachel’s father bought what seemed to be a random Christmas gift for Scott, a brew paddle, a tool generally used to brew beer. “At the time it didn’t make any sense,” Rachel recalls. “After his passing, we soon felt as if Pop had left us with one last nudge of encouragement and support. Since then it has become the name and symbol for our café. Pop’s initials are in our logo, and we have a sweet coffee drink dedicated to him.”
The original brew paddle is hanging in the kitchen for now but Rachel says it will find its way to the dining room eventually.
The Plauches have created a comfortable café vibe with refined touches. “We want people to feel like they've come into a different city while still offering the warmth only Mississippi can!”
