What does practicing medicine mean to you?
I am enriched and fulfilled at the end of the day when I have helped people with their communication skills and they feel like part of the community once again. I have seen many tears of joy from both patients and their loved ones.
– Karen Slater, Au.D.
What characteristics make a great doctor?
A great doctor is someone who listens to their patients and connects with them on a personal level. Building rapport and creating a relationship with a patient goes a long way.
– Mindy Eads Taylor, Au.D.
Who or what inspired your medical career?
My nephew passed his newborn hearing screening, but was diagnosed with profound sensorineural hearing loss at the age of nine months. I witnessed firsthand how devastating news like that can be for a family. – Charlene M. Taylor, Au.D.
In your opinion, what is the public’s biggest misconception about your field?
I believe the biggest misconception about audiology is that hearing loss only affects those that are older. Hearing loss can occur in anyone from age newborn to 100 years old, although it is more prevalent as we age. – Amanda Guillotte, Au.D.
