Summer is the height of puppy and kitten season. That means that your local humane society is taking in more and more animals each day. On any given day during the summer, the Humane Society of South Mis- sissippi (HSSM) can have 350-400 animals in their care. While HSSM’s adoption numbers have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, they still struggle with how many animals there are who need help.
“We do not see a decrease in our shelter numbers until the first cold spell,” explains the Development Director of HSSM, Katie King. “Living in South Mississippi, this sometimes won’t be until late fall.”
